Peter, et al,
First of all....wait until he's fifteen!...:-) I'm not kidding, many boys
live in a state of rebellion at this particular age...then quiet down in
about a year. At least that's my experience with my two boys. Now about
the SM stuff:
In our troop, we developed a statement that outlines just how the SM
evaluates and "signs off" on the scout spirit requirement. We state that
since the SM doesn't necessarily observe the scout in home, community or
school environments, his ONLY observations (and therefore his evaluations)
must take place at troop meetings and activities. This also helps motivate
those scouts who may be lacking in attendance....when they find out that
the SM isn't going to sign off on something he hasn't observed, they
understand why attendance at meetings and activities is important. The
scout needs to understand that he needs to be around to be "observed".
