Missing School for Scout event??

Troop 184 has just been notified that we have been accepted for the Naval
Academy Camporee in January at Annapolis. We are very excited about this
opportunity, but have one problem...
The event is on the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, when the schools
have a long weekend, however, it starts on Friday, and ends late Saturday.
The problem is that Our schools are out on Monday, not Friday. Scouts who
attend will have to miss one day of school.
Our school system has a policy that students who have perfect attendance,
and a certain grade point average do not have to take final exams. A
number of students make sure they do not miss any days to avoid the finals,
and I am afraid this will effect attendance on this outing. Plus a number
of parents, (my wife included) do not approve of missing school unless you
are sick.
I am curious to know how other troops have handled situations like this.
Have some school systems made allowances for scout outings like this,
taking into account the educational value? How would a troop go about
seeking such an allowance? Should we try to take advantage of this outing,
or should we not do it since it interferes with school?
Any help would be appreciated?

YIS
