Re: Volunteer Compensation

Dave,
Why Scouting is worth more than money? And why I've stayed in
Scouting.
I have two boys 6 & 7 I've been a Scouter since I was 20 yrs old am now
35.

When I was a Scout from the time I was 12 to 18 I had 5 - 8 different
Scoutmaster each did things different. When I was about 17 a good
friend who was also a DE asked if I was going to get my Eagle I said yes
as we were talking he said something about merit badge counselors and I
didn't know what that was except the ones at Scout Camp. He told me
that merit badges had to be passed by a councelor. I told him that most
of the merit badges were passed off by the Scoutmaster(s). Except for
the one I got a camp my first year. He told me the honest thingf to do
would be to have them passed by a counselor I still had a few merit
badges to do + redo the ones. Well I started to do them but when your
17 their a lot going on. I could have went ahead and got my Eagle but
that would not have been very honest. To this day when a boy gets an
Eagle I hurt because I will never have my Eagle. After that I made a
vow to me and God that would stay in Scouting to make sure the boys
knows how to get their Eagle.
I went on an LDS mission but when I came back I became an assistant
scoutmaster. Since then I held many position in scouting. This is one
of the reasons I've stayed in Scouting for the last 15 yrs. its never
been about money.

Yours In Scouting,
