Low Budget Camping (was $500 in gear? ...)

Godbout, Marc (GodboutM@ANDOVERCONTROLS.COM)

Randy lists what typical camping gear, based on the Scout Handbook, if
bought new, costs. While we could probably cut at that list using our
own opinions on what should and should not belong, how about starting a
new thread on how to save money by making our own gear. Or maybe any
other tips to help the budget? Here's my start:

Knife: No budget idea here. Just a warning that an inexpensive
solution is more
than likely to turn into a dangerous one.

Canteen: One liter soda or sport drink bottles. Free, if you
figure you're paying for
the drink anyway. They fit nicely in backpack pockets.

Pack: Rent one, especially for novice campers or if you
infrequently backpack.
A big Army surplus duffel bag works really well for
non-backpacking
events. Next, check out used/flea markets. Lots of
folks selling external
frames to make room for the fancy, wizz-bang, high-tech
gear.

Pack cover: Large, 30 gal or better, garbage bag.

Foam pad: <pick-your-favorite>-Mart sells blue closed-cell foam
pads for <$10

Mess kit: Plastic bowl, plastic insulated mug, and spoon in a
zip-lock (tm) bag.

Trail food: Shop at the supermarket, not the outdoor store. This
could be a subject
all by itself.

Cook stove: I think this should be patrol/troop gear, not personal,
but "hobo" stoves
can be made from coffee cans. Search the web for "hobo
stoves" for
instructions. I downloaded them a while ago and have
since lost the
original site name.

So how about it? Any other nifty ideas out there? I'll compile the
ideas into one document and post it at our web site.

Or we could talk about who's making how much and why and should we
salute him/her :>)
