COOKING AT CAMP

WAS RE: (I forget)

Some reflections

On a regular overnighter with a random number attending 10-12 more or less
and maybe some patrols that dont have enough guys to cook kitchen style...

If nothing was said at the troop meeting or the patrol meeting about food
(what else do we talk about at those sittings?) then it was understood by
the troop leaders and other experienced scouts (the 2nd & first class etc)
that it was each scout for himself (unless he made a plan with his patrol
or another scout buddy for private efficiencies.

Some boys need a little privacy especially on food matters until their
trust level is built.

It was also understood that if there was a new scout or a tenderfoot along
then he was to be counseled by his PL or the SPL and that matter was taken
care of...
It was further understood that if no camp support gear was requested or
made available for transport etc then all meals would be cooked over a
stove or heating source provided by your self or the campfire. (Even if the
adults have gas stoves for their camps)

I really had some fun with this.
Scouts found a lot of personal satisfaction and pride in preparing a hot
delicious meal
over a campfire.

I made sure they managed a fire big enough to allow cooking number of meals
by carving out small niches in the sides and shoveling the necessary coals
to cook with and not accidentally put out the main fire.
It worked for us.
The boys loved it.
It lightened our support load.
NEVER DO A JOB A BOY CAN DO>>>>>

and try to keep it simple
