I don't know of any sites that offer the trailing and stalking
signs (that's what they were called when I was a Scout....stalking
has the same meaning then as it does now, without the sexual
connotations); do you have access to one of the older Boy Scout
Handbooks?? In the 1959-73 editions, there's a section which
explains the various signs and symbols that Scouts use (to include
the circle with the dot...it's supposed to symbolize a doorbell)
and various ways that those symbols can be illustrated.... (it was
a Second Class Scout skill and later incorporated into the Hiking
Skill Award when we had Skill Awards).
>(Forgive me if I'm ignorant of any standard BSA guide to such
>signs, I was never a boy scout, and am new to cub leadership.)
But Brian, that's why this list exists....you're not being ignorant
at all!! We just don't *teach these things* for the most part
anymore, because the program considered them "passe" or "not strong
enough to carry through within the program today". I strongly
disagree with such thinking...and for every item that appeared in
the old books, there's a way to incorporate them into today's
Scouting and today's Scout. Just takes a little time, some thought
and the willingness to do it.
I'm glad you're willing to check it out and see what you can do
with your Pack and those symbols!
