Re: Wow! Cost of Scouting

I just read Anthony's posting in passing (I was actually looking
for Randy's email address...but the "filter" found this before
his).
But I've *got to* answer this!!
Randy stated:
>I was actually doing a little research on this topic this week --
>In our troop, these are the basic costs for a boy's first year:
>(Note -- some items are optional, all costs are approximate.)
>
>Registration 7.00
>Annual Dues 26.00
>Boy's Life 8.00
>Scout Handbook 7.00
>Full Uniform 100.00
>Summer Camp 150.00
>Basic Camping Gear 500.00
>Event Fees (Food, Gas) 150.00
> ______
>1st year total: $948.00
Okay. Divide this by 12 and then by 4
(948.00 /12= 79/4= 19.75 )
So, for each Scout, their parents spend about $20 a month.
Not bad for a program which does *so much* for them in the long
run!!
Furthermore....
>His second year, however, is much cheaper:
>Annual Dues 26.00
>Summer Camp 150.00
>Event Fees 150.00
> ______
> $326.00
Again, divided by 12 and then by 4 gives us a weekly amount of
326 / 12=27.17 /4=6.79
So, we're looking at 6.80 a week for the second year.
And Anthony replied:
>It's a nice idea, but the question remains: how much of the cost
>is handed directly to the Scout and his family, and how much is
>taken on by the unit.
Let's look and see:
First year:
Item Family/Scout Unit
Registration $7.00
Dues $26.00
_Boys_Life_ $8.00
Scout Handbook $7.00
Full Uniform $100.00
Summer Camp $100.00 $50.00
Basic Camp Gear $300.00 $200.00
Event Fees $75.00 $75.00
Total (First year)$623.00 $325.00
Second year:
Item Family/Scout Unit
Registration $7.00
Dues $26.00
_Boys_Life_ $8.00
Summer Camp $100.00 $50.00
Event Fees $75.00 $75.00
Total (Second year)$201.00 $140.00
>Activity fees averaged $7.00 per campout and covered
>transportation, food, and campsite costs. Summer camp was a
>special case which involved a lot of fundraising and bugging the
>council for "camperships."
Today's activity fee (and insurance) runs between $8 and $12.
>My experience tells me the more costs that can be covered by unit
>funds the more enjoyable the experience will be for everyone
>involved.
I agree with you. The higher the costs of Scouting, the less
enjoyable the experience will be for the Scout and his family. The
unit, chartered partner, and parents have to underwrite some costs
of the program to the Scout; the Scout too, can do his part to
underwrite some of the costs as well!!
