Oh, for the days of my youth on a farm in northern Iowa where the roads
ran for miles either straight north-south and straight east-west, with a
cross road every mile. Get on your bike and ride three miles east, turn
south and ride two miles, turn back west for three miles, two miles
north to home. Get a piece of paper and draw a rectangle. Label the
sides with the appropriate distance and compass heading and you're done!
(Or you can draw the map first!)
Things were sure simpler way back then! But then maybe we just try to
make them more complicated now. The roads there still run the same way!
We're not trying to make cartographers out of second class Scouts. We
want to get them used to using a compass and a map. The new requirements
(don't have the USSSP URL handy right now, but it has been published on
the list quite often lately) make that a little more clear.
KIS-MIF (Keep it simple - make it fun).
Hope this helps.
