Please note the dates on those books: in 1946 something like 80% of all
adult males were veterans. According to my uncle (part of the 80%),
after four years, "if it moves, salute it" was an as automatic a reflex
as breathing. Saluting a non-military person makes that non-military
person uncomfortable. Courtesy is the act of making others comfortable.

The late, great, Lord B-P was an upperclass Englishman to whom such signs
of "respect" were second nature. Such things are not the stuff of modern
American life (and frankly, I suspect they're not part of modern English
life either, but I could be wrong).

My opinion only, yours, and his, and hers, may well differ.
