How would you measure that? What constitutes spending "on the boys"? Do you
include upkeep on camps? Philmont? Sea Base? and the like? How about money
spent on research into program ideas? Literature? adult leader training?
Yep, the BSA is a business (not really a big one in today's corporate
climate- which is why the CSE only rates in the 400K range for a package).
It's business is providing the ways and means for the program to be
delivered to boys (and girls!)
Try to go buy the equivalent of the BSHB in a book store for $6.50 or so.
An equivalent field guide would run you $20-25. Subscribed to a monthly
magazine lately? Did you get it for the price of Boy's Life? Or was it 2-3
times that amount?
How about the fact that you get Scouting magazine as PART of your annual $7
adult leader fee?
I suspect we would all be better serving youth if we "got over it" regarding
the BSA,
its personnel costs and its rather awesome fund raising abilities and worked
on just delivering the program. That's what it's about.
