Re: Broken Homes

At 18:54 -0700 on 9/25/1998, Carol J. Fletcher mailed Re: Broken Homes:
>I agree with you. Many of these "strayed youth" come from all types of homes.
>But one thing I can bet is somewhat common in all of them is that somewhere
>down the line of their upbringing, the parents failed them in some way.

I think I disagree with you there. There are many influences that bear on a
child's outcome. Some are genetic, some are upbringing, and some are other
environmental influences. Attention deficit disorder, for example, can be
deadly when combined with influences from bad actors, and parents may be
helpless to deal with that. A parent can control what a child does only
when the child is in the parent's presence.

>This really goes to show you that parenting is THE most important job in
>anyone's lifetime.

I agree fully. Parenting and sexual cohabitation are two extraordinarily
important items in a young adult's life, and therefore we do whatever we
can to prevent the teaching of anything about them.

>It does a child wonders to here a parent admit they were wrong in
>certain instances. Isn't this the model we want children to see? Remember,
>children are a mirror to their parents and/or families.

Absolutely we want them to experience that. Children, however, do not
necessarily mirror their families, unless you include formation in reaction
to, rather than in emulation of, as mirroring.

>Yes, we should reach out to those youth who are walking the wrong road, so
>long as we don't leave the right road walkers in the dust. Look and listen to

Amen.
