There has been a lot of discussion on the list lately concerning military
terms and attitudes in Scouting. I see nothing wrong with using certain
military terms to describe things in Scouting. There are, however, certain
aspects of the military do not belong in Scouting. In the early days, I
believe, saluting the SM was a sign of respect. If I were to propose such a
thing today, I would be laughed out of the room. Not because my Scouts don't
respect me, but because it's a ridiculous request. As an adult leader to
youth my job is to earn their respect by showing them respect. Demanding
their respect changes the focus of the program from the youth to the adults.
When the Scouts of the troop I am presently SM of heard that I had just
gotten out of the Navy they expressed some deep concerns. A few years
earlier they had had a Marine recruiter for an SM, and he was very much into
military discipline. They though all military folks were like that, and they
didn't want to go through it again. Needless to say, they were a bit
surprised I didn't start drilling them and demanding salutes, etc. One of
the most important lessons I learned about leadership when I was a youth was
that you can't demand someone's respect. You have to earn it. You have to
start by giving those you lead more respect than they give you, and treating
them the way they deserve to be treated. The same thing goes for trust. If
you trust them, they'll trust you, but you have to go first.
