Re: saluting

John -

Scouts saluting the Scoutmaster? What will be next, marching at quick
time and everybody standing when the Scoutmaster walks in the room?

I don't have my old Scout handbook with me, but I'll bet it's NOT in there.
(Mine is the small "Handbook for Boys" circa 1956.) I suspect that some
scoutmasters, who had just left the army, have introduced the practice
to their troops, along with formation marching (I remember THAT) and
detailed uniform inspections.

I, personally, am tickled pink that the boys treat me and my assistant
Scoutmasters with genuine respect in the way they address us and the
way they act at Scouting events. I don't want to introduce any more
formality than necessary to have a good program. Saluting an individual
smacks too much of the military. (And I WAS an officer in the military for
several years, so I have no grudge against that institution -- it's just
not
appropriate for Scouts!)
