This is NOT a glitch, Calvin. It's the way the BSA is doing
business now....
In the past, when you requested items from the National office on
behalf of yourself or your unit, the items were sent to you at your
home address or at the address on the envelope.
(This doesn't include Supply Division items...just items you
request from a specific program or support division at National)
The BSA decided about a year or so back, that this opens themselves
up to a possibility that those "undesirables" would gain access to
information and/or resources which they have no entitlement to.
Therefore, the "connection" between National and Regional offices
and the local Council offices would be used more.
I ran across this when I requested another Hornaday Award square
knot for a new uniform. I wrote to the Hornaday Awards Committee
at the National Office, enclosed my $2.00 for the knot emblem, and
the year and location I received my Hornaday Award. I got a call
from National a couple of days later informing me that indeed they
did receive the check and would be sending the knot to my local
Council office (and verified which local Council office it would be
sent to). When I asked "Why can't you just mail it to me here at
my home?", I was told that "We're routing everything through your
local Council. They will either hold it for you or mail it to the
address that you're registered under."
So I waited for about two weeks, and then went to my local Council
office and asked about the knot. Sure enough, they had it there
but couldn't understand why they were holding it. Good thing they
didn't send it back!!
Since then, Calvin, I've been told from volunteers and
professionals that this is how the BSA is going to control
"sensitive publications and documents" like your National Tour
Permit and the BSA's Charter and Bylaws and Rules and Regulations.
Some Councils are going to be more stringent than others, but the
bottom line is that we're going to have to have more interaction
with our local Council offices now than in the past.
Hope this helps...but keep that number and address handy just in
case!!
