SM Minute Material

This just happened to me, I'm still on painkillers and I caant reach all the
keys (although i have almost five fingersthat woprk now) so someone else will
have top ckean i all up to use it.

I went to have the first dressings removed after breaking my wrist and be put
in a hard cast. First, i was knocked aside by the the size of the surgical
area - i'll have a bigger scar from a broken wrist than my wife had in any one
c-section - then i was on the edge of a short, unscgeduked nap on the sight of
the 6 inch external pin that still holds it all yogether. But what was most
interesting was the first things the doctor said to me.

realize, i hardly know this guy - 5 minutes in pre-op, 10 in recovery, 15
before i was released - so he doesn't know me or anything about me.

or so i thought.

his first question to distract me was "did everything work out ok with your
son at school?" I answeredyes because it had, but i must have shown sufficient
confusion, because he asked if i remembered what i talked about in recovery. i
said no, and he said from the moment i was coming out of it i was worried
about how my son was doing at school and if he was ok. it was only the
afternoon of surgery that i found out there eveb WAS a problem at school (at
the same time i learned that he was in two classes where 5 answers wrong on a
test equalled an 'f' - a whole different story) and we spent the next week
settling the problem.

this was important, though. this was son #2, brad, who always feels he's
second class, thhat everyone else is more important, that he's ignored and
sometimes that we don't care because he sees us let him handle some things
himself while we deal with #3's problems - he couldn't hear for 2 years and is
way behind language-wise.

I came home, went to dinner, and nailed #2 in a room alone and told him the
story so he knows i think about him more than i think about myseldf when i'm
in enough pain to think my arm is going to fall off when i know he needs me,
and that he should remember that.

we can't all have this experience, but i'm sure every father would say the
same thing, mothers would be evebn more inclined to say so. So the next time
any scout feels he's being ignored by his family, he should remember what
would happen if his dad was groggy with pain and anesthesia, and who his dad
would probably think of first.
