Howdy, Scouts-L Gang!
WHOA, and we have a time out on the field while the officials confer!!!
Folks, I have a small question to ask ya'll. What is going on? I've
been getting great Scouts-L messages saying that some councils will have
the new BSA Handbook on their shelves in the next few weeks, and even
word the new leader book will be available even as we speak. However,
one of my favorite publications, Scouting magazine proudly states that
these books will be published 1 Feb 1999, which, doing the math in my
head, is four and half months away! What gives? Are some councils in
some sort of accelerated Scouting program while mine lags behind in the
bonehead group, or what? I know the professionals have seen and may
actually have copies of the new books in their possession, but has any
Scouter on this list actually plunked down the dollars and purchased one
of the new books yet? Or have any of you been promised that you will be
able to buy one or both books before the end of the year? As our Circle
7 District Training Chairperson, I have both Scoutmastership
Fundamentals training coming up plus next spring's Junior Leader
Training Conference (we call ours "Swampfire") that I have to prepare
for. I don't want to teach last year's syllabus if there have been
significant changes to the youth and adult handbooks! Like most of you,
I feel that our Scouts and Scouters need the most up-to-date information
that is available. Okay, here's an offer that might raise an eyebrow or
two...if any of you Scouts-L folks who are willing and able will email
me to let me know when there is one or both books physically available
in your local Scout store, I will not only send you money to cover the
purchase cost and postage for the book(s), but will send you a copy of
our 1997 Alapaha Area Council Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow Book (still have
six left!). Needless to say, this offer becomes null-and-void as soon
as the aforementioned books start showing up on the local Scout Store
shelves! I'm not doing this to be the first kid on our local block to
get the books. I've got a Scoutmastership Fundamentals class scheduled
for the first weekend in December and our JLTC "Swampfire" kicks off the
last weekend in February. I need this material so that my staff can
prepare to give out the most current information to both groups.
Well, now I suppose the joke has become, "Which came first, Scouts-L
or Scouting magizine?"
Thanks ya'll, and, of course, Yours in Scouting,
