A total co-ed program on the horizon for BSA?

Kevin Pate (kevinpate@YAHOO.COM)

In August I learned that a task force is being created in the Cub
Scouts area to explore making co-ed the Cub, and I presume the
Webelos, program levels.

I am not personally in favor of such a program change. At this time I
am unconvinced that this is in the best interest of the youth, male or
female, or in the best interest of either of the, in my opinion, great
programs which exist for the Cub Scouts and for the Girl Scouts of
America.

However, if ultimately Cub Scouts becomes a co-ed program, I must
imagine that the Boy Scout program
will also undergo a substantial change when we begin the second 100
years.

Should Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts become co-ed
programs, the age range is 7 to 11. Given that Venturing, for age
range 14 and up, is already co-ed, it seems quite impossible to me
that National would leave the Boy Scout program based on a single
gender.
I can not fathom that National would encourage and recruit families to
register female youth into a revamped Cub program, then advise those
same families to "take a hike, but not with us" between 11 to 14, then
turn around and try to recruit the female youth back into Venturing.

Pure speculation on my part, at the moment, but by the time 2007 rolls
around, all of the program areas for youth below Venturing age may
appear quite different than the programs do in 1998.
