Re: New CM: The ``Speech"

I remeber being a parent of a new Scout...........we all (parents) got
called into a *Parent Meeting* one week to be *updated* on Pack
activities........it turned into a lecture about how we weren't doing
enough to help the Pack Leaders...............I sat there confused and
slightly angry about being talked down to..........I am a parent who
volunteers for most anything if I see the need or am
asked...........being new to Scouting at that time, I really had no idea
what was needed to keep the program running.............I DO know that
that *speech* turned me off and I never did do much to help while that
leader was in place.................now that my son has been in Scouting
for a few more years, I see what the program is about and I understand
where the need for help is.............I am now the Troop Committee
Chair...........I ask for help when I need it, and I ask people directly
when they are new so I can explain what is needed..............I can also
ask for help from parents in general via the newsletter and at Courts of
Honor............parents who have been with the program for awhile, know
what the requirements for an activity are and I tend to get plenty of
help that way.new parents just need to know they are wanted and what the
job might require...........they many times turn me down, but we also
talk about how they can help within their personal limits, and very often
we find soooemthing they can do...........just please, don't lecture!
...
Bev
