Re: New CM: The ``Speech"

Great!

Welcome to the ranks of CM!

I'm sure it will be rewarding for you!

I have been a CM for 2 1/2 years, and recently became a Roundtable
COmmissioner. Last Saturday, I received Commissioner Basic Training,
including how o recruit adult volunteers for Packs.

You need to inlcude 4 items in toyour recruiting efforts, based on surveys of
volunteers in Scouting.

1. Be positive. No one will willingly board a "sinking ship" just to help you
bail it out. This doesn't mean you are in trouble right now, but public
requests of assistance with no response might look that way. Get positive in
your own mind forst, before you can approach anyone else. Don't use the "only
a few people are running this Pack and it's high time you other slackers join
up or else" approach.

Already Positive?

Great!!! Then it's time to.....

2. Make a list. These will be prospective adults written down (!!!!) in the
order you or your committee feels are the best choices. Start with the first
person. If they do not accept the invitation, cross them off, and go to the
next, letting them know they are The Best Choice For The Position. (True,
because the first Best Choice chose not to participate), and continue until
someone sez "YES....Take me!"

3. Contact personally. Do not make a plea to them at an open meeting, by
letter, or by telephone. Successful volunteers want to have eye to eye
contact before accepting.

And.......

4. Tell The Whole Truth. Don't mislead them by saying it's "only one
meeting a month" when it also requires 3 additional meeting, training
sessions, and phone calls and field trip planning, etc. This will only breed
discontent, and you will be looking for a replacement leader very soon, as the
old one makes sure everyone knows you won't really tell them what the positon
needs.

All this works! Good luck!
