The Super Glue Thang

Hi Folks,

I thought I'd just recap both my recent experience and the numerous posts
regarding using superglue as a wound closure technique. Please, all you
medical types who've responded, correct me if this is not an accurate
summation....as if ANYTHING ELSE would happen on this list! <big grin>

1. Supergluing a wound is NOT appropriate if professional medical help is
available within hours.

2. Superglue that is available in the hardware store is "basically" the
same stuff that physicians use. The gel form is recommended.

3. CLEANSING THE WOUND is of the utmost importance in all cases. This
involves the following: 1) irrigation of the wound with sterile water
(sterile saline is preferable) to wash out particles. 2) if a lot of
debris is involved in the wounding, scrub with a brush and Betadine and
irrigate again. 3) treat with an anitbiotic ointment such as Neosporin
before closing or bandaging.

4. MY STATEMENT: As with all new first aid techniques (remember when CPR
was first introduced?), I am not recommending this to anyone....I will
probably use superglue if I deem medical help unavailable. That's my
experience and my decision.
