Member-At-Large

Mark,
I can't tell you for certain what your duties and responsibilities will be
in your council, but in mine the job goes something like this:

1) Members-at-Large are responsible for anything the District Chairman feels
they are capable of being responsible for.

2) Members-at-Large are responsible for anything that causes an argument
over who is responsible.

3) Members-at-Large are responsible for anything the Chairman, Commissioner,
or Executive need extra manpower for.

4) Members-at-Large (aka Troubleshooters) are responsible for any special
projects or crises the rest of the district staff can get themselves into.

Properly used, district Members-at-Large can help supplement the
commissioner corps during re-charter time, activities committee during
district events, finance committee during FOS time, and membership committee
during SN4S time. The position simply gives the chairman and executive a
pool of extra personnel to draw from during times of need.

I don't mean to paint a dark, foreboding picture of life as a MaL. Most of
the descriptions above are exaggerations. On the whole, I was treated pretty
well by all concerned during my tenure, and the position gave me the
opportunity to CHOOSE the job I have now. What you will do as an MaL depends
not only on the district staff, but your own vision of how you can help.
