<Rick said, excerpts>
Scouters who do not belong to religions that actively encourage toleration
and free thought may not be used to dealing with boys who speak out against
injustice when they see it, but Unitarians encourage such debate as part of
a healthy spiritual life.
How should a Unitarian Scout understand an Oath that is used by the BSA to
justify the denial of Scouting to children who may not believe in a god? It
was Baden-Powell's intention that boys without religion be led to a
spiritual life indirectly through a five-part method conducted in the Spirit
of Scouting, not cast out of his movement like trash! How should a
Unitarian boy relate to Scout Law that attempts to reduce the universal
inner spiritual value of "Reverence" to reverence to a god, clearly a
definition that excludes the spiritual life of his brother Buddhist Scouts,
not to mention members of his own congregation?
<Yada Yada Yada>
I am suspending any further input on the UUA discussion until such time as
those claiming to hold a more tolerant view of spiritual life become more
tolerant of other's views. Evidently, the some of us are all for being
tolerant of other groups, unless they don't agree with the core values of
those other groups. Also, evidently, some of us go to great pains to see
persecution and discrimination where none exists.
