Re: Problem Scout

I had a scout with severe ADHD in my den last year. He seemed fine at the
beginning of the year, but later he was taken off his medication because of
some bad reactions. AGH! What a difference!

I had to deal with him calling everyone names, rough housing and "beating
up" the other boys as well as innapropriate language. I thought I'd lose
my mind it was so bad.

For some reason, he considered my son his best friend. Which was sad in
itself, as my son really didnt care much for him. He continually bad
mouthed my son. I explained to my son this boys condition, and he seemed
to understand. To my surprise, my son asked if this boy could come play at
our house one afternoon. I said yes but was truthfully scared to death at
what would happen.

To my surprise, this boy was a true joy to have around. In having
one-on-one time with this kid, I learned that his maturity level far
exceeded his age group. he knew right from wrong and was actually very
polite. It was amazing what a different kid he was.

I soon learned that it was the group atmosphere that threw him off. I
think just having 8 other boys around him, he had a tough time controlling
his own behavior. But, because I had taken the time to get to know him,
and what behaviors he could control and what he was capable of, I earned
his trust and began giving him more responsibility and structure. Things
immediately got better. As soon as HE knew that I knew what he was capable
of, he was much easier to handle. I just needed to become a trustworthy
person in his mind rather than a judgemental adult who didnt like him.

He and my son continued to be very good friends thru the summer. I got to
know his parents etc. Now, I look forward to seeing him. If he sees me at
the school, he makes an effort to get my attention to say hello. He's a
GOOD kid, just a little out of control at times.

Just remember to never give up on this boy. Of all the boys in your den,
this is probably the boy who needs scouting the most.
