My pack would bolt like lightning if I tried that. One thing that we've
always kept in mind in my pack is that we are primarily in a low-income area,
though we have some families with very healthy incomes. All we charge is
registration and Boys' Life, and even then Boys' Life is optional. Last year,
for the first time, we had our Blue & Gold Banquet catered, and we did charge
for that, though families also had the opportunity to participate in a
specific fund raiser instead.
Instead of charging higher fees, we do a few fundraisers. In fact, we have
one at every pack meeting - our "snack bar" which every parent knows pays for
the bulk of our administrative costs. Our sponsoring organization allows us
to do dinners whenever we ask (once or twice a year), we have the Lad'n'Dad
Cake Auction at B&G, and Popcorn sales. This year we're also doing a Haunted
House. It is worth noting that some of the parents' employers are very
generous in donating supplies and equipment, and our sponsoring organization
takes good care of us.

We are guilty of this, in that we don't pay for PWD cars for the boys, though
we may this year. (For the first time in memory we have a budget surplus!
Don't know how that happened, but we're happy to see it!) We also ask that
families pay their way for our annual Family Campout (which is subsidized by
the Pack) and other district/council camp events for which a registration fee
is paid. (ie: Day Camp, Resident Camp, Webelos Woods, etc.)
We seem to have found a balance that works well for our Pack. In the end,
that in itself is often quite an achievement!
