This is a place where many of us have things that could be said to be wives
tales, and others that are actually useful. Things which I find
indespensable in my scouting first aid kit (yes, I have multiple ranging
from the cheep white one sold by the BSA to a professional level) are the
following:

Moleskin. I have had to use this more than once. When the scouts don't
heed the advice and hike with new boots, they need it. I too have had to
use it. Duct tape also works the same, but best if put on the heel at the
start of the trip.

Small Plastic Bag. I have had a few times when a scout started to
hyperventalate. The frist time this happened I had my FAK in an old, hole
ridden plastic bag. This worked great. Since then I cary a small bag
around my FAK to keep it dry and to use in case of emergencies.

I also suggest that you change you're personal fak into a survival kit.
This can be done easily with the addition of things such as emergency
blanket, iodine tablets, food (powerbar type), signal mirror, change.

Hope this helps. I made a store bought backpacking fak into a survival kit
about 5 years ago and have since used it often, and the things above are
things I have had to replace often, excluding the band-aids which we all go
through.
