Some of us adhere to the view that to cut the flag is to destroy the flag,
for no one part of the flag standing alone is the flag, and thus is
contrary to that statute.
When in the past my Troop burned flags, there was a discussion of what the
flag means to us, including some mention of those who did not come home
from the wars, followed by four Scouts holding the flag by its corners
lowering it onto the fire, and when it catches, tossing the corners in on
top of the center, with taps if there is a bugler, and with salutes until
the SPL judges the flag is consumed.
