Re: 'lawyers who defend criminals'

The recent thread is proof once again that even lawyers can't read <G>.

For the gentlemen said in so many words, "I AM NOT SAYING I THINK THEY ARE
IMMORAL" only to be attacked by my brethren and the children of my brethren
for thinking criminal defense attorneys are immoral.

It would be naive of us attorneys to think that defending those charged
with obnoxious crime doesn't cause heartburn among citizens unfamiliar with
the underlying theory of our court system. It is that through the clash of
ably argued opposing views, the truth will most likely emerge. Our trials
are not only for the purpose of figuring out what happened, but also for
determining whether the state is entitled to jail someone (or kill him) on
the basis of the kind of case the state has put together -- for if with
that kind of case they can jail him, then with that kind of case they can
jail you.

Thus spake the attorney.
