Our district recently -- like last week -- got a new district
executive. This happens quite often, actually; this district has been
something of a revoling door for professional staffers.
This new DE seems different from some of the previous professional
scouters, however -- older, from within the district, with a wealth of
Boy Scout volunteer experience and a real can-do attitude. The
volunteers appear to be on her side.
The challenge is in that pronoun -- she/her. There still aren't a lot
of female scouters in professional leadership positions in the Boy
Scouts. The last female DE in this council lasted nine days.
Well, today is day 10 for our DE, so she's already a success. But
because she's so new, she did not get an opportunity to go to the All
Hands this year and meet other successful DE's of her gender. Say what
you will -- there's an added issue when a member of one gender takes a
leadership position in an organization dominated by members of the
opposite gender.
There are successful, female DEs out there who get the job done and
have the respect of both the volunteers and the other professionals. Who
are they? Is your DE female, successful and willing to share her
knowledge with a newcomer?
E-mail me privately with names, locations and possible e-mail
addresses. Most of the people we're talking about probably are in
Nashville right now.
This is important to my district. We volunteers want a successful,
knowledgeable DE to lead a successful program.
Thanks.
