Re: Arrow of Light controversy
(no name) ((no email))

Jim Peterson <jpeterson@TZNET.COM> wrote that his District
Commissioner (DC) told everyone during a kick-off meeting
that in order to earn the Arrow of Light (Cub Scouting's
highest advancement award), a WEBELOS Cub Scout must *join*
a Troop.
He then stated:
>The requirements for AOL say that the boy must fill out an
>application, have it signed by his parents and show it to his
>Webelos Den Leader. It never says that the boy has
>to join Boy Scouts.
Absolutely.
>So, does anyone have an actual BSA clarification of this, or can
>anyone point me to the person in Irving, Texas that I need to
>contact to have my DC straightened out on this?
Instead of someone from National clearing it out, how about SHOWING
your District Commissioner a copy of the WEBELOS Scout Handbook
with the requirement listed?? It is NOT among the changes to the
program this fall; what it sounds like to *me* is that this guy or
gal wants to increase Boy Scout numbers by *forcing WEBELOS Cub
Scouts to become Boy Scouts, which is NOT the intent of that
requirement.
The intent of that requirement (to fill out and show it to parents
and the WEBELOS Den Leader) is that the WEBELOS Cub Scout KNOWS how
to fill out the Boy Scout application and what information is
required to go there....and to "bring home" the fact that on the
application, it actually ASKS if the new Scout is an Arrow of Light
holder or a former Cub Scout.
A WEBELOS Cub Scout and holder of the Arrow of Light has INFINITY
(okay, until he turns 18) to become a Boy Scout and start work on
Boy Scout advancement. We would all LIKE him to become a Boy Scout
like right now, but that's up to the WEBELOS Cub Scout/AOL holder
and his parents to decide...NOT the BSA program!
Hope this helps out!
