Great Place to camp In New Jersey

Dan Moser (DanrMoser@AOL.COM)

Scout Troops in the Mid-atlantic region looking for a neat place to
camp should consider the Scout Camping facilities offered by the United
States Coast Guard, Training Center at Cape May, New Jersey. This base is the
basic training center for the Coast Guard for the entire country as well as
the home port for several cutters and a small boat section.
There is a scout camping area on a grassy bluff overloooking the ocean
with fire rings, porta-pots, picnic tables, running water and a screened in
pavilion. However you cannot use this beach to swim because it is a
endangered bird habitat. All this was available to us for a very reasonable
fee($25.00 for weekend). By prior arrangement we were also given a tour of a
Coast Guard Cutter and the base fire station. Also by prior arrangement we
were allowed to dine in the enlisted galley. Food was very good and very
reasonably priced(cheap).
We spent Saturday afternoon on the beach at Wildwood, one of the few free
beaches left in Southern New Jersey. and the evening on the Wildwood
Boardwalk, always a popular choice with Scouts. Contact the Coast guard,
Public Affairs, at 609-898-6969 for more information.
