I'm putting on my asbestos suit, getting ready for the
flames to come, BUT...as I understand it from our District
Advancement Chairman: in order to be a Merit Badge
Counselor (for any Merit Badge) you must demonstrate the
ability to him/her to teach that particular Merit Badge
based on 1) educational background, 2) current career or 3)
current hobby experience. For example have a degree in
Mass Communications, and a minor in Political Science. I
have worked since I got out of college as a advertising
salesman. I am registered to teach the Communications,
Salesmanship, Cit. in Community, Nation and World MB's.
Having been in Scouting for 15 years, I have experience with
camp cooking, hiking and camping, while in the Army, I was
in the Corps of Engineers, so I have experience with compass
work. I would be eligible to teach merit badges in those
areas as well but our council has a five merit badge limit,
and plenty of counselors for those merit badges. One of my
ASM's is a railroader, he is registered for Railroading; one
of the ASM's works for the State in their communications
division, he is registered for electronics. One of the dads
in the troop owns a coin store/pawn shop, he teaches coin
collecting. One of the Dads is a fireman/EMT, he teaches
First Aid.
Can you see the trend? We all have professional experience
in the areas of the merit badges we are registered as
counselors for. So you must find someone who has
professional or educational experience in the area of the
merit badge, and be registered as a counselor in the badge
in order to teach the merit badge(s) that are currently not
covered.
