Don't be confused, Don. The difference is that amateur radio does not
have a horde of sensationalist journalists waiting to breathlessly
report any and all abuse perpetrated (or allegedly perpetrated, or
*possibly* could be perpetrated) over the medium -- or nervous Nellies
afraid of the (liability) shadow being cast by such coverage.
Give you a for-instance. When my son's Den was being courted by his
eventual Troop-to-be, we were invited on an urban hike, one segment of
an officially-sanctioned inner-city circuit. Some of the neighborhoods
we walked through, even in daytime, made me distinctively nervous (this
from someone who had recently lived downtown, as an urban homesteader).
Some of the sights included used needles in the gutter, discarded and
broken cheap wine bottles, and residents who clearly didn't quite know
what to make of a uniformed bunch of suburban Scouts parading loudly
through their streets.
Bottom line: we were probably much more in jeopardy that day than
*everyone* who will participate in JOTI will be, but a modicum of good
sense got us through and a good time was had by all.
BTW, don't get me wrong -- there's certainly the potential for
inappropriate behavior on the Internet. Last JOTI, I had planned to use
CU-SeeMe for a video experience with our Scouts -- until in preparation
for the event I connected with a supposedly (and explicitly) G-rated
reflector site, only to be confronted with a picture of a *very* nekkid
young lady! Needless to say, I quickly dropped *that* activity off our
list! ;-)
