Scouters:
I appreciated your response and encouragement. The result of the meeting was a
written letter to me and my wife stating that there was not sufficient evidence to
determine that scout1 had pulled a knife on scout2 . While it was very carefully
worded (somewhat akin to President Clinton's explanation of his recent embarrassing
incident) my son was not called a liar, but instead it was stated "that he
perceived the situation differently..."
A little more background. Scout2 is very active, almost 13 and a life scout. He has
ADD and a mild auditory processing problem. Because of his mild disabilities which
are not visible and not obvious and because boys at this age are not always "kind",
he has received his share of being "picked on".
Scout1 is active, almost 15, very small for his age ( I mention this only because
both scout 1 and scout 2 are the same size even there is a two year age
difference).
I am very active in the troop and was active in cub scouts before. I was treasurer
last year, straightened our the finances, got a substantial contribution from
Charter organization and handled National Jamboree finances. I became scoutmaster
in January 1998. Everything and I do mean almost everything has happened the first
8 months of my tenure. The parental support is good the troop is stable and growing
slightly (about 73 registered active scouts currently). I have pretty good
parental support, but lack strong support from committee chairman (also new; Job
change travels 50% of the time; likes to intercept and keep parental complaints)
and the previous and current quartermaster resents me becoming scoutmaster.
I am not happy with the decision, but I think it is important enough to "deliver
the promise" that I am going to continue a strong, upbeat program with the support
of God, my wife and my son. My son and I are going to put this situation past us,
"water under the bridge", and continue on.
YIS,
Bill Roswell
