Re: flint & steel fires

One of my other hats is that of a voyageur re-inactor. From there I got
into flint and steel firestarting. I even started teaching it in our
University of Scouting last year (after teaching that boring old
computer stuff) and I sell the kits. I guess it was well recieved, I've
been asked to do it again. I was also a judge for the firestarting at
Klondike a couple of years ago and gave extra points for flint and steel
and had the boys who used mag mad at me for not giving them all the
extra points.

Anyway, the secret is char cloth (made of cotton cloth), or you can use
charred punky wood or even charred shelf mushrooms. This catches the
spark, and will start glowing. You then wrap it with your tinder and
blow (upwards or smoke gets in your eyes). This will soon (if you're
doing it right) catch fire which you would put down on your fire lay.
