Flint n Steel / Scoutmasters minute

William Grimes (persianblue@JUNO.COM)
Mon, 17 Aug 1998 23:08:01 -0400

as I read Peter FArnam's post on flint and steel and reached the final
paragraph,
I thought "I need to strat a new folder on Scout triva."
I began to select text and a Scoutmasters minute appeared

"It took me just a few strikes with my file on a piece of granite
to generate a spark that landed on the cloth.
The spark began to glow and spread, just like it was supposed to, and
when I began to blow on it, the shredded rope caught right away, and
presto, there was a fire made from flint 'n' steel (or, more precisely,
steel 'n' granite).

To give you an idea of how reliable it can be when you know what you're
doing,
I understand that Dan Beard, the first National Comissioner of the BSA,
used flint 'n'
steel to light the opening campfire at the first national Jamboree in DC
in 1937.
Boy--talk about the major leagues!"

Scouting is like a fire started by flint and steel, (or Granite)
Some times it takes a little work to get a spark to catch, but when the
spark of scouting starts a fire, you know that it will be warm and
cheerful.

You never know when something will strike a spark and light an
inspiration.
