Milage and Money

Have you told your volunteers that they can get a tax deduction for
their milage? If you can't pay cash money, additional tax deduction
items are a "next best" thing. I don't think it is the full business
rate deduction, but I seem to recall that it was in the 9 cents a mile
range (same as medical milage)

To all of those "One-Hour-A-Weekers"
Our TC members are entering into a debate in the next few days. "To
Pay or Not to Pay" mileage to those drivers who bring Scouts and/or
equipment to Summer Camp (also included were Troop campouts that were
over say 100 miles distant). Several months ago we talked about asking
the boys for a surcharge fee to be placed into a pool to be divided
amongst the drivers to help defray fuel costs. We were talking about
$5/boy, and only if all parents agreed to the fee beforehand. The
trouble arises when setting the fee amount. On our Summer Camp trip
this year, we had 19 boys, the one way trip was 164 miles, with 5
drivers each way, which leads to 1690 driver miles and $95 to divide
equally (somewhere around $0.056/mile). Our problem gets worse when
you factor in that we forgot to collect the surcharge fee to begin with.

My question(s) to the List is...Do any of you have any system like
this? and could you share it? or are we going down a never ending road?
It is a "Good Deed Daily" for the Scoutmasters to give up family
and job time to attend Summer Camp. Is it wrong to ask for some help
for gas mileage?
