Embarassed Eagles

OK... I know I opened myself up for a few flames. But did we all
read my entire post or just the things we wanted to throw back at
me. I never said that I was embarassed for the boys. I said the
boys felt embarassed because they saw what the one boy did to
earn his Eagle and that they might have done better.
I did not add that one of those boys had built a house for his
Eagle project for Habitat for Humanities and that mine just rebuilt
a small bridge over a small drainage canal. I was not impressed
with the project that mine did because he and I both knew that he
was capable of better. All the people saw from the audiance was
that one boy was covered in badges and the others weren't. I
knew what each had done to earn the Eagle.
I have received many a post about how a certain boy had just
met the requirements to earn Eagle, but had a list a mile long of
other just as worthy items to their name. I think that is great.
More power to these wonderful scouts. I know a bunch, too.
I also know a bunch, and so does everybody on the list, that
will do the minimum for every task. The scout that steps in and
helps to set up camp and the one that you have to continually
hunt for when there is work to do. We run accross them on a
daily basis at work. Why should we not be surprised to see them
in scouts.
My point was to say that we as their leaders should show by
our example that doing your best is important. If the 21 merit
badges is their best, then we should be happy. If we know that
the scout could do better, then we need to incourage them to do
better. Don't look at the new requirements as a hurry case to
get your Eagle before the rules change. Look to it as a chance to
earn one more badge on the road to the ultimate goal.
Please don't take everything that somebody says on e-mail as
the Gospel Truth or the final answer, because there isn't room
for every exception to every statement that we post. We talk in
generalities a lot of times and that is one thing that hurts e-mail
posts. I could say that the earth was round. Somebody would
write me and tell me how stupid I was because I forgot about the
mountains and canyons.
