The classic DC-area trail is the C&O Canal towpath, which runs from
Georgetown in DC northwest toward Cumberland. Parts are canoeable (the
canal, not the towpath!), and the grade is near level. At Great Falls
there are some more challenging day hikes -- our Troop recently went on
the aptly-named Billygoat Trail!
A bit further away, the Appalachian trail crosses from Virginia through
Maryland to Pennsylvania near Harpers Ferry, WV. Challenging in parts,
but hikeable by all but the most novice hikers.
There may also be some urban hiking trails in or near DC -- I'll defer
to the NCAC'ers on that!
