Troop 377 from Stony Creek Mills Pa returned Saturday 8/1/98 from a we=
ek at=0ABlue Ridge Mountain Council=92s Camp Ottari near Roanoke Va. Mys=
elf and two=0Aother adults took nine boys from our Troop to this camp. Th=
e remainder our=0Atroop spent the week at our Council=92s camp , Hawk Mo=
untain Scout Reservation=0Athe week of July 12th.
Three of our scouts participated in the New River Adventure Progra=
m,=0Awhite water canoeing, shotgun, COPE, Rappelling, white water rafting=
and=0Acaving. My Eagle Scout son came back from white water rafting bea=
ming about=0Aall the fun he had. He said =93 This is why I joined Scouts =
to get to do stuff=0Alike this and I feel sorry for the kids who quit sco=
uting before we did this=0Atrip=94
Our six Scouts in base camp all have a good time and each completed 3=
=0Amerit badges. In several cases the staff went the extra mile to make =
sure the=0Aboys were able to finish. Camp Ottari=92s waterfront programs=
are particularly=0Agood and all our Scouts could not spend enough time t=
here. This was a nine=0Ahour drive for us and we were concerned about ho=
mesickness, but some=0Apreparation prevented this from being a problem. =
I think being so far from=0Ahome ended up being an advantage because our =
boys, not knowing anyone else in=0Acamp went out and made friends. Sever=
al of our Scouts exchanged addresses for=0Apen-pals with Scouts from othe=
r parts of the U.S. and also being =93outsiders=94=0Athey enjoyed much su=
ccess in patch trading.
We found the staff to be excellent and very enthusiastic towards wo=
rking=0Awith the Scouts and the atmosphere to be more causal and relaxed =
than our=0ACouncil=92s Camp.
The food was average for camp food, but being from Pennsylvania our=
boys=0Adid not know what to make of the grits.
The Friday evening closing campfire featured a really impressive OA=
call=0Aout ceremony, our boys were taking about that all the way home. =
Myself and=0Atwo others from our troop enjoyed going to a Cracker Barrel =
with the members=0Aof Tutelo Lodge #161.
The terrain at this camp is pretty steep and the program areas and=
=0Acampsites are spread out pretty far. After a couple of days we learne=
d how to=0Aplan to keep the hill climbing to a minimum.
This was our Troop=92s first venture away from our Council=92s Camp=
for=0Asummer camp and our experience was good enough to make us consider=
doing this=0Aagain.
