While discussing Troop Committee and Scoutmasters and ASM's with Mike Walton,
I realized that an important NON BSA use of ASM was inherit in my committee
and officer(non committee) position descriptions. We emphasise ADULT
RECOGNITION!
We use the title of ASM to indicate and promote training. Adult volunteers
who are registered are members of committee until they have been trained.
(let's skip the consideration if you should control the size of your
committee) Upon being trained they are awarded their position as ASM.
As I said, we do not strictly follow BSA guide, but this works for us.
We have taken adult recognition to a new level. When new adults volunteer,
and sign adult leader apps. (which we encorage), They are awarded an "old goat
patrol" patch, at the next Court of Honor. This encourages them to wear a
uniform. Adults like youth like to belong and have an identity. (We hope all
adult leaders will set the example!)
When they are trained they are awarded their trained patch (again in front of
Troop) and promoted to the status of ASM and awarded their ASM patch. We also
track the awarding of the BSLtraining award and award it publicly. (Both at
Court of Honor much to thier surprise!)
So you see we do not "correctly utilize the term of ASM. ASM are part of the
committee. The Scoutmaster and1st assist. scoutmaster serve the PLC and not
the committee as Mike indicates should be.
The result is most of our adult leaders are in uniform. 80%+ of our adult
leaders have a minimum of Boy Scout Leader Training and many advanced training
or Wood Badge.
But most important, we have fun!
We dont twist arms. Leaders tend to volunteer. Adults show up in uniform and
we have large numbers go to training, because they want to, not because we
twist arms. I guess its setting the example and RECOGNITION that makes it all
work!
We also award yearly Certificates and Trailblazer Council Strips to all
volunteers who served as chairpersons or coordinators each year at the Courts
of Honor We all like some thank you's and recognition.
