Re: GPS Accuracy

Very good point, Cheryl! Calling for help once you need it (or at least
strongly suspect that you do) is important... but it had better not be your
whole emergency preparedness plan!

There's a soapbox in here somewhere on which I rebel against the seemingly
universal premise, even in advanced first aid classes, that an ambulance is
only 7-10 minutes away via 911. This is often not the case, especially
when in the backwoods or during a disaster.

Be prepared. What made Scouting count in my life was not having to sit
down lost when the batteries in my GPS or cell-phone die... knowing how to
hike, camp, navigate, survuve... THRIVE using only low-tech skills not
taught elsewhere. Do I carry a GPS and a cell phone or HT? You bet! Have
they ever been seen out of my pack? Nope.

Lead by example, and demonstrate reliance on good Scoutcraft and skills.
Leave the electronics as a back-up plan, and hope they still have batteries!
