Yes, that is true. But, over the years, as we take the 'untrained'
and train them, the camp becomes better and better every year. We
have a lot of unused acreage that they scouts use for low impact/lnt
and it remains 'unused' looking because of what we teach them. As
they gain the skills they become more adventureous in using the
undeveloped areas. The older scouts take it upon themselves to
teach the youngers (as they should!)
Ever see a dog go around in circles before he lies down. That
describes our scouts looking for tent sites. They look for likely
sites and them walk around in circles looking at drainage, roots,
rocks, slopes, etc before they pick a spot. And then, before they
pitch the tent they lay on the ground and roll around looking
for the best and most coomfortable spot for their tent and
sleeping bag. Its a stitch to watch but it works. The new
scouts look at the olders like they are crazy but then they learn.
