Jim,
I'm involved with the conversion of a boat for use by my Council's Sea Scout
Program. Truthfully, I know the boat will never operate more them 100
miles offshore, but it's pretty well equipped for what we call "self rescue".

The boat itself has several watertight compartments, backups for most
critical systems, right down to a sextant and tables in case the GPS packs
it in.

By self rescue, I mean a very well stocked first aid kit, 2 life rafts
with 406 Mhz EBIRB, & survival suits. It sounds like overkill, but the
idea is to stay alive, either till help gets there or you sail the life raft
or dingy into port.

Far too many people venture into situations without adaquate preparation,
even if it's somthing simple as a foil blanket & some waterproof matches.

As my Scoutmaster used to say "Be Prepared - live it, don't just say it"

YiS,
Martin
