Just a note on what can be "unintentional" hazing. One of the posted responses
suggested that it might not be "hazing" if the recipient willingly submitted to
it. "Willingness" is an interesting concept, it involves not just personal
desire but the pressures of the "superego" to be part of the group and abide by
inflexible rules - not just do your best.
The unintentional hazing was of a Scout who stayed with a unit but could not
get past 2nd or 1st class swimming requirements. Each year he would
"willingly" jump into deep water and have to be rescued though he could swim in
shallow water. Whether it was a case of physical or psychological inability,
the boy kept trying and the (former) leaders kept putting him through the
ordeal. He lost several years in progressing down the trail. In my mind,
thoughtless adherence to policy or procedures or requirements can be
tantamount to hazing. His new scoutmaster asked whether there can be a better
way, an alternative path to success. Of course there was and is. I guess the
issue is that we have always to keep alert and introspective.
Hopefully, that Scout will persevere and progress with different mentorship.
Yes, few Scouts may make it to Eagle, the seductions of the outside world (or
sloth) may stop them, but every new Scout is an Eagle candidate, and each of
their paths are individual.
