Cub Retention

Regarding CS Retention, This will interest many of you. 1990 Philmont
Training Center, attended CS Retention Conf. First time I ever
remembering weeping at PTC. The statistics given us by the instructors,
from National were appalling. Exact numbers are buried somewhere, they
are not important since they dont seem to change much from year to year.

What we, the learners DID find interesting, were the reasons. BSA had
surveyed 1000 familes to determine why boys were not staying. #1 reason
given was, Poor or Unavailable Leadership. A deeper look showed DL's
were "Poorly Recruited"..."Never Got the Help I
Needed".."Training?..Sure, Where?". We concluded, after lengthy
discussion that ALL leaders should be recruited "honestly"...Enough of
this, "Aw It's A Piece of Cake..Only a Few Hours a Month" routine.
Followed by an sincere attempt to TRAIN these people, and support them
until the cobwebs are gone.

In '94 I beleive it was, National whipped the Evelyn Wood version of
CLBT on us, beleiving it would solve the, "I Dont Have Time For All This
Training" moaning. Bahh!...This ranks right up there with the idea of
sticking Webelos Activity pins on the hats!!!!

Is there anyone in Cub Scouting, with a pulse, that needs MORE help,
than a brand-new Den Leader? She/He is the only and primary contact the
little guys have. Start the dominos right...TRAIN that wonderful
soul--Let them give the boys "The Program" that we all know works..Watch
good things happen...If Cub Scouting is Contagious, Let's Have An
Epidemic!! Retention woes CAN be dealt with. If I had the health and
wealth, I'd go on this Internet thing with a video-conferenced CSLBT
course.

For the Boys, For Scouting,

Bob Carr
