Laguna Station Review

Our troop just completed a week at the Laguna Station, a high adventure
base on the Gulf of Mexico, operated by the Rio Grande Council in
Harlingen, Texas. The base is on the tip of South Padre Island near
Port Isabel.

We had 32 Scouts and 14 adults participating in the following Laguna
programs (cost is noted):

Island Adventure ($435) - Included sailing, fishing, beach camping,
snorkeling and a trip to Mexico.

Gulf Sailing Adventure ($450) - Sailing, including small sail boats and
a chartered yacht, plus snorkeling and fishing.

SCUBA Certification ($450) - Classroom and practical experience,
including open water dives in the Gulf, to become certfied SCUBA
divers.
Gulf Fishing ($475) - Fishing in the surf and flats plus a trip offshore
for deep sea fishing.

Each crew had a great time. Several boys who have been on other high
adventures, including Philmont, said that this was as good as anything
in which they have participated. They especially enjoyed the relaxed
atmosphere and the food which received very high marks. The base
personnel demonstrated a great deal of flexibility. When the winds
weren't favorable for sailing, the Gulf Sailing crew was treated to a
Gulf fishing trip which they thoroughly enjoyed. By the way, the
fishing was great, much better than during our trips to the Florida Sea
Base and the Bahamas in '91 and '94.

In summary, this is an adventure which our Scouts (and adults) highly
recommend. For additional information, see:
