Superactivity

Hi all,
Just got back from the big summer activity of the 319th Wenatchee
Venture Crew, a 140 mile canoe trip down the Columbia River from
Wenatchee to Richland WA. Took us 7 days on the water, 6 nights, 3
portages around dams, many wonderful people who helped us on our way,
and two or three perps who figured they needed our cooking gear more
than we did. That's right, we got ripped off, one night. And, to add
insult to injury, they took our COFFEE!!! We recovered, made a report to
the sheriff, replaced our cooking gear with expensive, inferior gear
that was available. We didn't realize our COFFEE!!! was missing until
that night, when we were another 20 miles down river. The kids handled
it well, had fun, came together as a unit, had a party the night we got
back (can't I just go home and go to bed???).
Our first five days were spent slogging through resevoirs behind the
dams. The last two were spent in the last free flowing stretch of the
Columbia Rives as it passes throught the Hanford Nuclear Test Facility,
near Richland, WA. Our longest day was 31 miles in 6 hours, and our
hardest day was 24 miles in 11 hours. Our shortest day was 5 miles. We
bucked headwinds that came up around 1400 daily, until the kids figured
out that they could miss the winds by getting up and on the river
early. After that, it was easy.
It is a trip that I would do again, in a couple of years. If anyone
wants any more info, itinerary, etc., just email me.
