I think this is a great observation. Like it or not these are apparently
the statistics. If you extrapolate further years by the same percentage
(assuming 1st year represents 10-11 year old scouts) then after 7 years you
would have about a 2% retention. After 7 years they would be 18 and no
longer eligible to be a Boy Scout.
2% ? and what is the percentage of scouts that make eagle? I know you can
make numbers say anything you want. But it seems to be a slight bit of a
coincidence. And, yes, I know that not all scouts take until 18 to earn
eagle, but how many eagles drop out of scouting.
Not every scout is destined to become an eagle. I feel earning eagle is an
honor and should remain so. However, a point for discussion by the list -
if we worked on retention, would we also be impacting the number of eagle
scouts? Is there any correlation at a troop level concerning retention and
the number of scouts that earn eagle in a troop. I have observed in our
area that some troops are considered to be "eagle mills". (Not making any
comments about that). But, without any evidence to substantiate the claim,
it also appears that they retain a larger percentage of their scouts.
