I take it you're talking about the medals themselves...yeah, they
can still be purchased and in some Councils, they will GIVE them to
you if you ask them for it and explain that you never did receive
the actual award.
Funny everyone thinks that the AWARD is the square knot.
It isn't.
The SQUARE KNOT is the informal acknowledgement of the actual
award, be it plaque, certificate, or actual medal or medallion.
Most of our Scouting service and training awards come with a
certificate, and some of them come with a "thingy" that you
actually WEAR during formal occasions.
The AWARD itself should be on record with your local Council,
Richard; national awards (for instance, every time I request a
Hornaday knot, I have to write to an office at National) are listed
at the national level to protect the number of knots out there
being "circulated". If there's any concern, just bring the
certificate into your Council office and show them. If it's
framed, make a photocopy and bring that in.
There's only a few awards that don't come with a certificate; the
Distinguished Commissioner Award we've been talking about this week
is one of them...you have a choice of bringing in the bolotie (if
you were given on; I wasn't) or a photocopy of the plaque.
Exploring awards come with a tie-tac -- no medal. You can bring
that in or the certificate.
Replacement knots for most awards are freely available at most
local Council trading posts, and you don't need to show anything
for them. Remember, the knots are provided as a CONVIENCE, not as
the actual award itself.
