Here it is:
<3 Satellites = No Fix
3 Satellites = 2D fix
>3 Satellites = 3d fix = 100 Meter C.E.P. 95% of the time due to Selective Availability (SA) - that's the specification with SA. Worse yet the actual accuracy can vary continuously due to SA. No one can guarantee any better unless it's a military receiver or a differential receiver.
Altitude Accuracy: forget it, could be off more than 500 feet (It's a
math thing).
Want better accuracy? Get a Differential GPS Receiver (assuming you're
somewhere near a DGPS beacon.)
GPS is fun - ask me about the little Delorme unit I have in my car that
works with Delorme Street Atlas 5. I'm a dealer. I'll sell you one.
